An article written about the Sahara during this year is as follows:
"Ray Bolger, hot from triumphs on Broadway, was the Sahara's first super star when the hotel opened in 1952. The parade of the biggest names in show biz continued, and since that historic Bolger bash, the Congo Room has showcased such crowd pleasers as Buddy Hackett, Judy Garland, Jack Benny, Johnny Carson, Donald O'Connor, Robert Goulet, Liberace, Danny Kaye, Ernie Ford, Connie Francis, and Roger Miller, just to name a few.
Some of these entertainers are still in the Sahara stable of super stars like Buddy Hackett, the comic genius who has scored well in every form of entertainment from television to stage roles and Disney comedy . . . and is still rated at the top of the Las Vegas list of favorites in his capacity Sahara Congo Room shows. Only Hackett would have dared to experiment with a special one-a-week only show, a 2:30am Sunday, with no announcements or prior notice or advertising.
'I'll make it when I can and when I can't, start without me,' he kidded. But when he did his occasional 'for swingers only' shows, the place jammed to the rafters and the laughter didn't die out for two solid hours.
Now, Don Rickles has joined the VIP group of entertainers in the Congo Room, a graduate of the Casbar Theatre, where Louis Prima and Keely Smith also zoomed to nightclub fame and Norm Crosby is making strides to superstardom.
Nine years ago Rickles was booked into the Casbar, and a few moments before he went on for the first time, this reporter told him: 'I'll be cheering for you.' His modest reply: 'I'll need it!' But he didn't.
The word spread. Everyone - including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Red Skelton, Danny Thomas, Jerry Lewis, and other top stars - made it a point to visit the Casbar when Rickles was appearing. The Rickles kept spreading. His mother Etta came to all his openings, and even she wasn't spared from his verbal, very funny, attacks.
Donald O'Connor smiles as he looks at the 'newcomers' appearing in the Congo Room. He smiles because he is still a top attraction after years of record-breaking performances." - Forrest Duke from the "Visiting Fireman"
Baseball base-stealer, Maury Wills, ex-Dodger turned Pirate appeared at the Sahara in 1969.
Also during this year, Duke Ellington had a special 70th birthday celebration during his closing night in the Casbar Theatre. In the picture, Robert Goulet, bearded for an upcoming movie, assisted with the cake cutting and led a standing-room-only audience in singing Happy Birthday. Another party, given by President Nixon at the White House took place in May of 1969.

Eglash was serving as relief conductor at five Las Vegas hotels as well as working on special material for some top artists. Included in this list were Mel Torme, Gizelle McKenzie, Jack Benny, Barbara McNair, Buddy Hackett, and Donald O'Connor. Majoring in music at Los Angeles City College, Eglash later studied theory and composition under Jacob Previn. For some years he served as area editor for Downbeat Magazine and had a number of stories on music and musical theory published.

I'm going to urge the other guys (entertainer friends) to make the trip, too. It's a real pernodial gland." - Norm Crosby

The show itself ran the gamut from jokes about the desert in general and Indian Springs in particular("I can plainly see why the Indians left this area"), to zingers about the military in general and teh base commeanders in particular. During this year discussions subjected on entertainment at the resorts:
"For more than five years this pillar has conducted a one man campaign to begin using new faces and each hotel build its own stable of stars. No one could see our plan and now Buddy Hackett comes to the rescue complaining of soaring costs for talent.Hackett says 'One way to curtail the enormous salaries is to get rid of the high priced superstars and hire more lesser name entertainers within the budget set each year.'
The famous comic includes himself as one of the superstars. Besides being a top comedian, Hackett is vice president of Del Webb Corp. which owns Hotel Sahara and he speaks as a hotel official. He would get rid of himself first. From now on Hackett feels that none of the hotels here should hire superstars and the owners form a group to work out some kind of non-competitive policy for a few years.
If the city wants to continue operating as the Entertainment Capital of the world a solution has to be worked out to have prices cut. Talent today runs high and this was one of the reasons for many of the lounges closing.
Hackett agrees with some of our ideas. He stated, 'The unions are together, the entertainers are united, so why can't the various hotel owners get together and form an organization to draw straws as in the sports draft.'
The talented comedian would love to be the top official of this city as far as policies are concerned. Resort Hotel Association better give the idea some serious thought as it is later than you think. A few months ago Hackett had plans to do one show a night, six nights a week. He dropped the idea due to economic conditions. This meant all the people associated with his show world get a half a pay check instead of a whole one. Plans are underway to cut down his playing time next year at Sahara. Hackett's idea may have a lot of merit and maybe more things could be added when the various men meet. As the commercial says, 'Try it, you may like it' and it might be successful gentlemen. The entertainers are pricing themselves out of show business in the present market and if they keep demanding high salaries many of the major hotels in this resort city will be forced to close the main showrooms. Lounges then will become the thing again." - Phil Solomon, June, 1972

In 1974, Sahara hosted the Nelson Sardelli 1974 Event Sunshine.
"The Nelson Sardelli Starshine was a brain storm I had in late 1960s. I felt a need to help the mentally retarded that at the time was a "closet thing" and people thought of it as a disease and not the condition which it is. After doing dinners, mini telethons, and marching on the streets gathering money, I decided something different should be done to call attention to the problem and help raise money by offering a service that everyone needed - a shoe shine (in those days people actually wore shoes and not sneakers). The idea was to get stars, celebrities of all walks of life, communityleaders, politicians, and corporate VIPS to shine shoes.... it is an event and a half... we have big orchestras.... dancers, performers etc..... Starshine has occurred 3 times in Las vegas, in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Bermuda and throught the USA - Philadelphia, Seattle, Dayton, Atlantic City etc...
I have a list of people that have been a part of Starshine through the years. In the 1974 starshine, Paul Anka paid $1.000 to have Joe Delaney sing "My Way" with Paul feeding him the lyrics.
I have had prime ministers, princes, governors, etc, Rocky Graziano, Tony Orlando, Buddy Greco, Pat Cooper, Jerry Vale, David Copperfield, Clint Holms, Billy Eckstine, Frankie Randall, Keely Smith, The Treniers, Cork Proctor, Tony Martin, Lovelace Watkins, Frankie Avalon, Micky Hargitey, Jose Ferrer, Joan Rivers, and Melissa Manchester, to name just a few, appear at these functions" - Nelson Sardelli, October 12, 2002

In 1993, the Congo Theatre showcased The Rich Little Show with guests Kathy Walker/Jeannette Markey, and Boy-lesque starring Kenny Kerr. The Pacific Rim showcased Island Magic, and Hot Lava Island Magic.
In October of 1994, Bill Bennett retired from Circus Circus Enterprises, then bought the Sahara from the Lowdens for $193 million.
In 1994, Congo Theatre showcased Boylesque starring Kenny Kerr, and Zsa Zsa Gabor Comedy Roast with Sid Caesar/Henny Youngman/Foster Brooks/Slappy White/Jackie Gayle/Freddie Roman. Also showcased were Beatlemania, Little Richard, Jackie Mason, The Original Tonight Show Starring Steve Allen, Neil Sedaka, and Suzanne Somers.
Bennett, in keeping with his previous success of Circus Circus, Excalibur, and Luxor, immediately began a $100 million renovation project. As part of these renovations, the Sahara Hotel remodeled the legendary Casbar Lounge and announced plans to construct an all-new Sahara Theater.
In 1995, Bennett announced big plans for the resort including adding 50,000 square feet of casino space, and the porte cochere and front entrance being moved south along the Strip toward the property line of the adjoining Web 'n Wild attraction. About 1,000 hotel rooms will be added, bringing the total close to 3,000 as a couple hundred of the existing patio rooms were to be demolished. The pool area was to be reconfigured and former Rio food and beverage director Dan Collins was hired to begin an immediate upgrade of food service.
The resort already saw the addition of 600 slot machines, and a new slot club program was being initiated. The focus of the casino market was to be on middle-class adults.
During this year, Congo Theatre showcased Beehive Revue of '60s music, Boylesque starring Kenny Kerr, James Brown, Merle Haggard, Richard Jeni/Alan Thicke, Kool & The Gang, Lee Greenwood, John Pinette/Bob Nelson, RuPaul, Neil Sedaka, and hypnotist Marshall Sylver.
One entertainer who my daughter, son-in-law, and myself see at the Sahara as well as all over Southern California is Jeff Dunham. This guy is great, a guaranteed good time!
In 1996, a status report was given on Bennett's progress of transforming the resort to compete with the megaresorts. The plans included: The main hotel and casino entrance on the Strip were being relocated to the south end of the property on the Strip next to the adjacent water theme park; All 1,750 of the existing rooms and lobby area were being renovated, as were the existing restaurants and bars; Two existing pools were to be replaced by a new "harem-style" pool complete with a sunbathing platform just below the water's surface; The expansion included an additional 50,000 square feet of casino space, tripling the size of the casino. Many of the old video poker games and slots had already been replaced with new equipment since Bennett and his executives took over, but the additional space meant another 1,300 games; The historic House of Lords restaurant was being retained but was due for renovation. There would be two new restaurants and a new 850 seat buffet.
The day the old bungalows came down, Hotel Operations Director Scott Menke stood with a group of TV and news reporters at the edge of the old Sahara pool. Bulldozers were already at work a short distance away. Menke patiently fielded questions one at a time and turned to look across the pool. He stated it was hard to believe that this pool was once the biggest pool in Las Vegas. It was true that Sahara hadn't kept up with the megaresorts with the continuing sprawl of entertainment attractions where, for instance, new pools are now often measured in acres rather than feet.
Bennett was once part of the old Del E. Webb organization which as we all know, once owned the Sahara. Reporters asked Menke if Bennett had any feeling of nostalgia for the elements of the old Sahara that were falling before the bulldozers.
"None at all. Mr. Bennett does not have nostalgia for buildings that have ceased to do their job well. What he does feel strongly about is the company behind these buildings and what the company is capable of becoming." - Scott Menke

During March of 1997, the Sahara gave away a new $130,000 house provided by Rhodes Homes, complete with $10,000 worth of furniture.
In 1997, Congo Room showcased Little Anthony & The Imperials, Gallagher, Rich Little, Jackie Mason, Oak Ridge Boys, Rita Rudner, The Smothers Brothers, and Steven Wright.
In 1998, Congo Room showcased Jeff Dunham, Gallagher, Richard Jeni, Love Potion #10 with The Platters/The Coasters/The Drifters, Jackie Mason, John Pinette, Joe Piscopo, Rita Rudner, and Steven Wright.

In 1999, Sahara announced the building of "the first major roller coaster introduced during the millennium" created by Premier Rides. The unnamed ride was to be ready for the third annual NASCAR Winston Cup 400 at the LV Motor Speedway in early March, 2000. Click here for the artist's rendition of the ride.
In 1999, Congo Room showcased The Amazing Johnathan, In Concert: The Platters/The Drifters/The Coasters, and The Platters/The Marvelettes/Billy Guy's Coasters.
For New Years Eve the Platters, Marvelettes and Billy Guy's Coasters appeared at 10:30pm. The tickets were $99.99 which included champagne and party favors.
Sahara remodeled 1,720 rooms, completed an 85,000-square-foot casino, four restaurants and the virtual reality Sahara Speedworld.
Sahara and NASCAR Cafe teamed together to bring the famed entertainment complex to Las Vegas.
In the Spring of 2000, the 75,000-square-foot (350-seat) NASCAR Cafe featuring exciting stock car racing entertainment and an all-American menu opened. The NASCAR theme encased the entertainment complex, including giant projection television screens equipped with surround sound that will feature NASCAR racing, driver profiles and the latest NASCAR news.
"NASCAR has expanded its brand of competitive stock car racing throughout the United States and the new NASCAR Cafe complex at the Sahara certainly reflects the tremendous interest in our sport. Las Vegas offers the biggest and the boldest entertainment in the world, and the Las Vegas NASCAR Cafe will be the largest, most comprehensive entertainment experience we've developed to date." - Mark Dyer, President of NASCAR Cafe.
The entertainment complex includes a large dining area upstairs and the Bill France Boulevard, a stock car racing showcase runs through the entire lower level of the NASCAR Cafe. NASCAR memorabilia of the past and present, including authentic NASCAR Winston Cup Cars, are featured along the Bill France Boulevard. The existing Sahara Speedworld, a one-of-a-kind intense race car driving virtual reality attraction located inside the Sahara was converted to the NASCAR theme.
"The NASCAR Cafe will be an exciting new addition to the property. And combined with an intense, major new attraction also scheduled to open early next year, the Sahara Hotel and Casino will provide the ultimate in entertainment for race car driving fans and thrill seekers." - Yale Rowe, Director of Sahara Marketing
NASCAR Cafe opened to rave reviews and overflow crowds in Nashville, TN, Sevierville, TN, Myrtle Beach, SC and Orlando, FL. The Las Vegas NASCAR Cafe will be the fifth venue in the popular chain.
On March 2, 2000, thousands of fans turned out to watch celebrity NASCAR drivers inaugurate the $50 million racing attraction on the Las Vegas Strip.
"I feel lucky. I'm going to win a little money here - on the track and off." - Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR Winston Cup Champion
Earnhardt was one of 20 stars of the race circuit who showed up for the opening of a new race-themed attraction.
The drivers were in town for the weekend's double-bill race event, the Sam's Town 300 NASCAR Busch Series race on Saturday and the CarsDirect.com 400 on Sunday.
The drivers greeted fans in front of the new NASCAR Cafe, then went inside to autograph panels on a wall of the eatery and sign souvenirs for guests waiting to get in. Balanced over a bar in the restaurant is a replica of a Pontiac race car named "Carzilla," billed as the largest stock car in the world, which is 34 feet long by 12 feet wide, weighing 6,200 pounds.
"This is really neat for the sport of racing. Ten years ago you'd never have believed you'd see anything like this. This shows how the sport is growing." - Terry Labonte, Winston Cup Champion
Other drivers on hand included former NASCAR Winston Cup champion Rusty Wallace, Ricky Rudd, Tony Stewart, Sterling Marlin, Kyle Petty, Steve Park, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Lepage, David Green and Dick Trickle.
Dyer conducted two years of market research before embarking on the Strip venture. As president of corporate NASCAR Cafe, based in Knoxville, Tenn., Dyer also led the development of similar ventures in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Nashville, Tenn., Orlando, Fla. and Smoky Mountains, Tenn.
Dyer praised Sahara Chairman William Bennett, who has developed the Strip icon into a race-themed resort. Bennett was also one of the original developers of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Also contained in the Cafe were 20 authentic NASCAR race cars lining the restaurant's circular wall, and Richard Petty's No. 43 stock car can be found hanging upside down near the exit escalator.
The Cafe serves appetizers such as Qualifying Lap, salads such as Starting Lineup, and meals such as Sandwiched In, Sizzlin' and Swishin', and Feelin' the Heat. Desserts such as Sweet Success.
The NASCAR Cafe also features the roller coaster "Speed," a Cyber Speedway that features 24 stock car racing simulators, a state-of-the-art arcade and various race memorabilia.
The roller coaster named "SPEED-The Ride," is Las Vegas' fastest roller coaster. The launch site is located inside the new NASCAR Cafe, a great fit for SPEED. Designed by the renowned high-tech attractions company, Premier Rides, SPEED, through state-of-the-art roller coaster technology, slingshots passengers out of the NASCAR Cafe along a path that runs parallel to the Las Vegas Strip.
"SPEED will certainly live up to its name and give riders an exhilarating experience they won't find anywhere else. The sudden bursts of speed along with the many dynamics of this ride-including a 90 degree incline taking riders more than 200 feet skyward--make it an intense adventure for would-be daredevils." - Yale Rowe
An extraordinary force slingshots SPEED out of its launch site and over its first hill. A steep drop follows as passengers travel 25 feet below the surface through an underground tunnel before propelling them back above the ground and then through a breathtaking loop. A second set of LIM's (Linear Induction Motors) then propel SPEED to its fastest speeds, from 35 mph to 70 mph in just two seconds, as it zips through the Sahara's 192-foot-tall marquee before curving around the porte-cochere and up a steep incline -- stopping 224 feet above the ground. SPEED then carries passengers through the same exhilarating path in reverse.
SPEED was the first LIM roller coaster on the West Coast. This high-tech coaster is powered by 88 state-of-the-art linear induction motors which create an electromagnetic wave of energy to accelerate the coaster trains to top speeds in the blink of an eye. The sudden burst of speed creates enough momentum to zoom riders through the entire course of the ride reaching speeds of 70 mph in both forwards and reverse. SPEED has two LIM launching areas, the first in the loading station and the second between the loop and the passageway through the marquee.
On March 20, 2000, fierce overnight winds ripped through Southern Nevada, and at about 1:00am, the winds toppled a 90-ton construction crane onto the parking lot of the Sahara and onto the adjacent Wet 'n Wild Water Park. The crane's base buckled and the 250-foot tall crane collapsed. The crane, which was there to build the roller coaster, was not in use at the time and no injuries were reported. A spokesman for the company that owns the crane said strong gusting winds blew it over.
"It's something that's very freakish. It doesn't happen very often," - Jim Buford, Chief Operating Officer of Jake's Crane, Rigging and Transport International.
Inspectors from the Clark County Building Department sealed off the Banzi Banzi ride at the water park after finding damage to a conveyor. A picnic area was damaged also.
A National Weather Service spokesman said peak wind gusts of 56 miles per hour were recorded in Las Vegas shortly after 1:00am.
In March 2000, the David Cassidy-Don Reo, The Rat Pack is Back, opened in the renovated Conga Room after completing an engagement at the Desert Inn. The 550-seat showroom was at approximately 80% capacity during a recent performance, a very respectable count this early in its run. It was that the show has not changed significantly from its previous Desert Inn stand, it is a much tighter, better flowing, always swinging 90 minutes or so. Lon Bronson's second orchestra performed the music. Bronson conducted one orchestra for David Cassidy and Sheena Easton's "Live At the Copa," at the Rio. Pianist Greg Bossler also appeared.
While at the Desert Inn, the show was caught up in a lawsuit filed by the Sinatra and Davis families. Also, in March 2000, the Frank Sinatra Estate's Sheffield Enterprises Inc., won an order to depose an executive at the Sahara to obtain confidential documents to support its lawsuit against the show's former host, the Desert Inn. U.S. Magistrate Roger Hunt allowed Sheffield to depose Sahara's general counsel, John McManus, and obtain its confidential February 9, 2000 agreement to host the Rat Pack show to assess damages allegedly caused by a five-month advertising campaign for the Desert Inn's show and sales of goods and services, which Sheffield alleges reduced the market value of the late Frank Sinatra's trademark.
Gordon Gaming Inc., dba Sahara, filed an emergency motion on March 10, 2000, to quash Sheffield's attempts to get the documents because it feared Sheffield, which sued the Desert Inn in September, 1999, was conducting a "fishing expedition" to determine whether it can file similar lawsuits against the Sahara. The Sahara was not a defendant in the case.
But Mort Galane, Sheffield's attorney, disputed such claims, saying the company needs the information on the Sahara's "seating capacity, ticket pricing and how the producer is to be paid" to prove how the show's performance in the Desert Inn's small seating capacity showroom "diminished the value of the Sinatra mark as far as an opportunity to mount a production for a main showroom on the Strip" is concerned.
"If the Sinatra family wanted to mount a major production for a major showroom that would seat 1,200 people, say the Bellagio, which is charging $100 for 'O' they can't do it because the (Rat Pack) name is now identified with low seating capacity and low prices," - Mort Galane
On April 28, 2000, 24 members of the parachute team "The Flying Elvi" took the ceremonial first trip on Speed - The Ride. The ride was $6.00.

Also in 2000, I Dare You - The Ultimate Challenge was being shot across the street at the empty lot which was once part of El Rancho Las Vegas. Sahara and Stratosphere was so accommodating to the crew and all involved that Andrew Jebb, Vice President of Production for Nash Entertainment went on record to state how pleased he was with the hospitality and cooperation he received from both resorts.
In August, 2000, Sahara and NASCAR Cafe hosted MTV's "Senseless Acts of Video" for a daring stunt performed by Rocketman. MTV filmed the "Rocketman" stunt, in which Eric Tollman Scott jumped from the Sahara's 192-foot marquee, flew through the loop of Speed -- The Ride while the coaster is in motion and landed in front of the NASCAR Cafe for the networks popular "Senseless Acts of Video."
In September of 2000, I asked Stan Irwin if any part of the original resort exists today. Mr. Irwin stated that the Caravan and Congo Rooms, the second floor, and the two story buildings close to the Sahara entrance are part of the original resort.
In 2001, the resort contained the following restaurants: Caravan Coffee Shop, NASCAR Cafe, Paco's Bar & Grill, Sahara Buffet, and Sahara Steak House.
Race car driver Dale Earnhardt died in February 2001, just a couple of weeks before he was due in Vegas to drive in the annual Winston Cup Race. NASCAR Cafe owner Mark Dyer said the Earnhardt racer displayed there in the resort had to be moved to make room for all the flowers and remembrances that fans left.
In February/March, 2001, The Sahara knew what her customers wanted - she posted odds on possible winners of the Survivor II TV show at its sportsbook. It was noted that Kel Gleason, the 32 year old Army Intelligence Officer was the early 6-1 favorite. Debb Eaton, the 45 year old corrections officer was second at 7-1. Sportsbook boss Andy DeLuca stated that the odds were listed only for entertainment purposes. State law does not permit gambling on such situations.
In early 2001, a look at the energy problem on the West Coast brought out some interesting facts. The sign in front of the Sahara, has about 7,250 incandescent lamps, each burning 25 watts.
Sahara won the 2001 What's On Visitor's Choice Awards for Best Blackjack.
In August of 2001, Steve Wyrick was awarded Magician of the Year for 2001 for the second year in a row by the International Magicians Society. The IMS is the largest such group in the world with more than 24,000 members. One of its main functions is to actively support excellence and education in magic.
On September 14, 2001, Sahara displayed the message "God Bless America" and a U.S. flag on its digital marquee in observance of the national day of remembrance in honor of the victims of the terrorist strikes in New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. Sahara also displayed this message on its in-room channel. The message was displayed for one week.
In November, 2001, I asked Sam Melchionne where exactly Don The Beachcomber was as it is long gone now.
"It was directly above the casino and it's interior west wall was the exterior west wall of the hotel itself. The Don The Beachcomber large exterior sign hung on that exterior wall. Elevator in lobby was at the south end of that room. Sahara installed a 2-3 story mini-Astrodome 'bubble' on that north side of the resort accommodating a NASCAR attraction. That is what has replaced the upstairs Don The Beachcomber and the north side of the old casino. See the old south and west wall facing The Strip from newsprint picture?
Now it is replaced with a huge "NASCAR RACES" signage. " - Sam Melchionne, Nov. 2001
In 2001, The Congo Room showcased The Rat Pack is Back, and Michael Holly Off The Wall Comedy Hour.
The Sahara Theatre showcased Steve Wyrick. The Casbar Lounge had nightly entertainment.
On May 6, 2002, Charo, a singer, dancer, composer, classical guitarist, comedienne and everybody's favorite "cuchi-cuchi" girl, stars in the fast-paced spectacular, "Bravo." An international variety show with contemporary Latin music, flamenco, salsa and samba dancing packed with humor and passion.
"For me, this is like a homecoming. To perform again at the Sahara is a thrill for me and I know the audiences from all over the world will enjoy all the many exciting elements that make up 'Bravo'." - Charo

Since the mid 1970s, Charo has been a mainstay in Las Vegas making her debut as a headliner at the Sahara. Charo is instantly recognizable with her big blonde hair, her tight sequined dance costumes and voluptuous figure accompanied by her trademark sexy wiggle of the hips and the phrase "cuchi-cuchi." She has appeared on countless hit television shows including more than 45 appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and on the series "Love Boat" more often than any other star. Recently, she was introduced to a whole new generation of fans in a nationwide cellular phone commercial for Sprint PCS.
In June, 2002, the birthday girl gave me pictures of her now.

The party was a great success with Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt and Mayor Goodman reading proclamations
The following are part of the speeches given during the celebration and as you will read, the 6th lady's birthday was shared with both laughs and sentiment.
"This is really old Las Vegas. I see Sonny [King] out there and we're celebrating our 50th Anniversary of the Sahara and he's wearing the same clothes he wore back then. Really, this looks like a real polyester crowd here, its unbelievable, but I am the happiest mayor in the world because I am the mayor of the greatest city in the world. I can't wait until we make the Sahara part of our City. We're going to annex it very very soon because we love the Sahara. I'll never forget when Carol and myself first came out here and for every single special occasion we would go to the House of Lords. Do you remember that, the old House of Lords? There was really nothing like it. Everybody tried to imitate it but no one was ever able to succeed. . . So when Charo asked me to be here today and bring a proclaimantion I couldn't say no, I couldn't wait to get here because this is a very special day. . . Basically the bottom line is we're declaring October 7th the Sahara Hotel Day in the City of Las Vegas, and we ask all the citizens to acknowledge the 50th Anniversary of the Hotel and we congratulate Bill Bennett for his many successes with the Sahara Hotel and Las Vegas is an icon and the Sahara Hotel is an icon within Las Vegas so I wish Sahara the best of luck for another 50 wonderful years and thanks everyone for being here today." - Mayor Oscar Goodman"Today is a very special day for me. When I was 14 years old I actually stayed at the Sahara Hotel and back then of course it didn't have the unbelieveable make-over, and new porte cochere, the new tower, and everything like that. Back then I always knew that I wanted to make magic, a dream come true and I had a dream of performing in Las Vegas but I never thought it would come to fruition. I guess I was 24 when I moved out to Las Vegas to open up downtown and headline and at that moment I thanked God because my dream of performing in Las Vegas came true, and at that moment I was totally content, I was happy and to me I was headlining in Las Vegas. Three years when Mr. Bennett came down to saw my show at the Lady Luck and called me into his office, and said he was going to build me a theater beyond my imagination, beyond my dreams from the ground up, it was a gift from God. A wonderful man who had enough faith and determination to take this property and turn it around and make it into and I don't think I can say it better - The Jewel of the Desert, and I'm very happy to be performing here at the Sahara and happy to be performing and working daily with a wonderful staff. . . ." - Steve Wyrick
". . . Ola, this is Charo, how are you today? I love the Sahara and everyone knows it. It is not a secret. The Sahara is part of, for me, when you grow up and go back to your grandparents, or your parents' home where there's memories and love. I came to the Sahara to work when my coochi coochi was only a ceechi ceechi. . . . I opened January the 2nd for Buddy Hackett and Buddy Hackett was so kind. I was very young and very unknown he gave me starring billing and gave me the start to my career. Then the Sahara liked me very much. . . . I remember Johnny Carson, working with Johnny Carson. I remember when he get caught fooling around with a lady and the wife came in and catch him. I remember the fight with Sonny and Cher. I went in the middle and take 2 and take 3 and I ended up with a bloody nose and black eye. I remember performing Jerry Lewis, Jim Nabors, its my life. Part of my life is here. . . . I am so glad that I come back now . . . with a big production show Bravo, and I'm so proud to be part of this event and I love this place with all my heart.
I love Mr. William Bennett. He is a very very fair boss. We eat for free. We eat the same food as is in the buffet. He treat all like his family. God bless him, please give him a big applause. When you can succeed 50 years in the Entertainment Capitol of the World with victory, with success, it has to be something special here. Its magic at the Sahara." - Charo". . . When I came here with Louis and Keely, the population was 33,000 people. I remember one night - true story. When Las Vegas first started blacks weren't allowed in the hotels. One night who came to see us in the Casbar was Cab Calloway. He was sitting down watching Louie and they asked him to leave. Louis says let's get off the stage and better we leave, leave Las Vegas period. He was just so pissed off you know, but Las Vegas has come a long way, God bless it, and I hope it continues and I hope you all continue to enjoy life there." - Sam Butera
"This is a used to be town - that used to be the Dunes, that used to be the Landmark, that used to be the Sands. This is still the Sahara!" - Sonny King
"I was so happy to come to the Sahara Hotel 'cause I opened in 1977 at the Silver Slipper with Boylesque and when they decided to tear it down Paul Lowden was running the joint at the time, and he called and said Kenny why don't you come down to the Sahara. It was the six of the greatest years here in Las Vegas at this hotel and I had the best time at the Congo Room. Its so amazing. I come back down here and see the same waiters, the same waitresses - they all have walkers now, it takes three days to get breakfast. Its great to come to affairs like this and its good to see the people from old Las Vegas here. Mayor you're doing such a wonderful job and I want to thank you. I am so glad you are here today because I know your scheduled is so hectic." - Kenny Kerr
"First of all I'm here to interpret what Charo said a little bit earlier. I was here co-starring with Mae West in 1954. I'm still around thank God. I'm so happy because this is the biggest crowd I ever performed to in my career. . . . When I was here with Mae West my real name was Joseph Charles Michael Tereferelo (sp). Mae West asked me to come out and look at the marquee, and my name took up the whole marquee. She said from now on your name is Steve Rossi and here I am." - Steve Rossi
"I think Steve did longer than I appeared here at the Sahara. I did nine years here at the Sahara. As a matter of fact I brought my album that I did with my ex-wife Roberta Lynn, along with many other ex-wives. I remember her though. I brought my album from 20th Century Fox. The reason is 20th Century Fox told me they had 40,000 and they're willing to give them away as pizza holders." - Freddie Bell
"The first time I walked in here was 1954. They had the three camels out front. . . . I was did 13 bombs at Desert Rock Nevada and I use to come in and sing at night. I got a chance to come in here alot. They always ask me about being there were 13 atomic bombs if anything ever happened to me. The Government called me and I said I glow in the dark but other than that I'm fine. The thing is that to me this hotel was to me was great. I working at the Thunderbird next door. Every time they got in trouble, as I worked 2-4 in the afternoon, . . . they would call me and I would come over to this wonderful hotel. I was working both at the same time. Like Rip Taylor when they called me, he was sick. He said come in and stand by. I stood off stage in a tuxedo and he had a fever . . . this was when the lounge was against the north wall. As the show progressed the audience wasn't that good, and Rip was yelling into a garbage. He was swearing and he had me in stitches. Halfway through the show his fever broke and we finished the show together. This hotel to me has been one of the greatest. I'm so glad its around. Its the only one left. Thank you Sahara for all the wonderful memories." - Carme
"It was a pleasure playing here when I first came to the city in 1965. It is so great a hotel that I must say, the gentleman, he impressed me so much - 27 years with the company, am I correct? Next year you get medical and dental. God bless you all and much success to the Sahara." - Nelson Sardelli
"Lt. Governor, Mayor, everybody, unless you're 40 or older, you will never get the tempo of the Sahara Hotel. You're looking at the power houses up here. . . . Sonny King started in 1955, you would walk in you would have Louis Prima, Sam Butera and The Witness powerhouses going thus far, Freddie Bell and the Bellboys followed him, the Characters, the Goofers, the Mary Kaye Trio. You can go on and on. Its not like that anymore but that's the power house that you're seeing here, standing here right now." - Sam Melchionne
Sam Melchionne and Nelson Sardelli gave me some additional thoughts:
"I can never forget the tempo of the casino with the 'round-the-clock, one-after-the-other Powerhouse Casbah Lounge attractions and the Congo Room Show breaking that emptied the crowds into all of that. Action, action, upbeat at all times. In Don The Beachcomber's where I provided dance music I also can never forget playing the closed-to-the-public welcome parties for the Congo Room stars' opening the nite before and the very next night the same private thing for the closing stars' party...... like for Liberace, Donald O'Connor, Judy Garland, Liza, Johnny Carson, Pat Boone, Connie Francis, Hackett..... etc. and the parties for each of their birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and any celebration of theirs. Sahara publicized and entertained their stars royally. Our group also was 'plastered' large on billboards from downtown, along LVBN, around the hotel and clear to the then only exit from the airport on Paradise Rd." - Sam Melchionne, Oct. 2002"Although I was already a professional when I arrived in Las Vegas in 1965, the Sahara was a place I could go and watch the great stars - main room as well as the lounge - and learn more... improve by observing some o the greatest talents that our business had to offer. Yes...it was great...all that and the best cheese cake in the city being served in the cafeteria." - Nelson Sardelli, 2002
The following pictures were donated by the Sahara.

After Bennett's death, Charo was taken off the Sahara's line-up. Shortly thereafter it was rumored that management was trying to break Wyrick's contract. Wyrick fought and won the dispute and then quit the Sahara.
Buddy Hackett was not only an entertainer, but also a poet and in 1970 wrote some poems which he shared with his patrons. In September of 2003, Nancy Williamson donated the following poems which Hackett authored in tribute:
. . . and when I looked around they were gone.
an old red tricycle, a deerskin bag with marbles in it
a push-mobile made from a union hardware roller skate
an almost new roadmaster bicycle that cost $7.00
a 1934 Plymouth sedan with Chevrolet wheels
a blue jacket and a pair of white flannels
two guys up the street who joined the Marines
a little grocery store
a little drug store
a little tailor shop
young, happy weekends on the outskirts of every city
quality workmanship in almost every craft
children with wide eyes - who believed parents
an old lady who could do anything, named Mom
an old man who was the real hero from all the books
the flag I loved and respected
the unknown, facinatingly scary place called the moon
Peace!
The World!
Me!
FATHER
He was so tall when I looked up
His face a tender crag
No harm could come when he was near
from the man or beast or plague
Then time doled by and I grew some to see into his eyes
Though not so tall and a bit less strong but my - how he was wise
Disrepectfuly time flew by and I looked down to see
The balding head of the giant man that once held me on his knee
Timidly he reached for me, my coat or hand to clutch
But tall wise me avoided him for grown men seldom touch
He's gone away - he won't be back
Some even think he died
But I know he still lives in me and relish it with pride
Before he left I felt it all
His height, his strength, his brain
With dignity I think of him
With respect, I feel no pain
And I look down at a boy below and this is what I see
A little boy who once I was - and one day will be me
BAR MITZVAH
Why a man, oh Lord
Why a man
He's just a boy to me, oh Lord
Just a boy
His back is straight, his eyes are clear,
his heart is golden pure
His Mother's breast still feels his warmth,
her womb, each twist and turn
And I want still to take his Sins
It is a right I've earned
Do 12 years make a boy, oh Lord and 13 make a man?
Humbly I ask is this the way in your universal plan?
What mysteries has he solved, oh Lord
What havoc has he wrought?
He never made a war oh Lord
He never even fought
He's never learned to hate, oh Lord
It's not his natural way
For boys are boys, are seeking love, no matter what they say
When I think of all the slips I've made I look at him and I'm afraid
But I was afraid when he first walked
And I was amazed when he first talked
He'll do it Lord, I know he can
Please take him and make him
All things, that turn a boy into a man
(NO TITLE)
What do you do when you're in between
When you are not an adult and you are not a teen
When you are old enough to be physically grown
But still so young that you have to be shown
What do you do?
I feel so much for every man
For starving kids and Vietnam
For rickets and pickets and marches and strife
That I have no time to start my life
I am young and old and new and used
I've walked and talked and danced and boozed
Is the world so fast; am I so slow?
When does my life begin and go
Or do I wait for my mind to blow
What do you do when you're in between
To feel, to live, to find life's scene
Help me, help me to see please do
And then perhaps, I can, I must, I will help you.
