In January, 2002, Riviera announced that the Le Bistro Lounge was remodeled into a mini-showroom renamed Le Bistro Theatre.

Ricci

To bring this mini-showroom to the public Strip star Marlene Ricci began January 29th going indefinitely. She performed one show a night at 8:30pm.

Frank Sinatra's protege was born in Buffalo, New York and was singing since the age of five. By the time she was in her teens, Ricci's father was driving her to shows in nightclubs throughout the state. She was on the road for several years working all the clubs from New York City to San Francisco to Reno.

Ricci's audition in Vegas led to an immediate booking at the old Aladdin Hotel and it was only a matter of time before the Chairman of the Board recognized her talent and made her his opening act.

Ricci's years with old blue eyes would allow her to perform with large orchestras in many of the great concert venues in America, including Sunrise Theatre in Florida, Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey, Pine Knob in Detroit, Circle Star Theatre in San Carlos, Chicago Stadium in Chicago, and the Nassau Coliseum in Long Island. Ricci was exposed to well over a million people during her two and half years on the Frank Sinatra Show. Sinatra's quote about Ricci was "She knocks my socks off."

"Some people thought there was something beween us. It was never that way. He was like a father figure, full of good advice, never acting flirty, always very respectful. I got to know him not long after he married Barbara. I think it was a good time in his life." - Marlene Ricci

During Sinatra's off time, Ricci opened shows in Vegas at the Riviera, the Sands, and the Sahara with other big name stars such as Don Rickles, Flip Wilson, Alan King, Paul Anka, Sammy Davis, Jr., Red Skelton, David Brenner, Bob Hope, Shecky Greene, Alabama, and the Village People to name a few.

Ricci accepted a long-term contract at the Dunes' Top Of The Dunes that allowed her to keep her main room performances. Celebrities like Liberace, Glen Campbell, Gladys Knight, and Wayne Newton would make frequent trips to visit her at the club and making guests appearances. She was the chosen one for the cover of the very first Dunes' newsletter - The Oasis.

While at the Dunes, Ricci appeared more than 20 times on The Merv Griffin show, as well as many appearances on The Tonight Show, Dinah Shore Show, and Mike Douglas Show. During this period, Ricci also appeared on the CBS Special Cinderella At The Palace, which chronicled her own story of leaving a small town in upstate New York, coming to Vegas, being discovered by a big star and becoming his opening act. This special featured Sinatra, Tom Jones, Ann Margret, Paul Anka, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Andy Williams. The show was seen worldwide and led to bookings in Prague Czechoslovakia, Philippines, Chile, Canada, and Finland.

Most recently Ricci headlined The Great Radio City Spectacular at the Flamingo Hilton.

Marlene & Frank Sinatra, Jr., 2002

"My show is based on my own life experiences, from my wishes as a small child through the Sinatra years up to today." - Marlene Ricci, 2002

Also in January, 2002, I was given a picture of the stars of the show Thunder from Down Under with the Crazy Girls. (PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS A RATHER SEXY PICTURE. IF YOU ARE OFFENDED BY SEXY PHOTOGRAPHS, PLEASE DO NOT CLICK ON THIS LINK)

Also in January, 2002, Riviera opened its new new computer center containing 12 stations, located in the rear Grande Ballroom lobby where, for a fee, people can get their e-mail, access their sites, etc. For people who want to use their computer in their room, the charge for 800 calls is $1.00 for the first three minutes and 0.07 cents for each additional minute.

In January, 2002, Riviera Health Club featured facilities for both men and women. It contained the latest exercise equipment, deep tissue massage, steam rooms, oxygen pep ups, and personal one-on-one training. Located on the 12th floor of the South Tower, the club was open from 7:00am to 7:00pm, Monday through Saturday, and 8:00am to 7:00pm on Sundays. For more information call (702) 794-9441.

On February 3, 2002, Riviera hosted her Super Bowl XXXVI Party in the Royale Pavilion. Riviera offered a "Super Buffet" with open bars, wide screen TV's, autographed memorabilia and surprise commemorative gifts. Patrons were able to mix and mingle with NFL greats Gale Sayers, former Chicago Bear Hall of Fame Running Back; Jim Hart, former St. Louis Cardinal Quarterback great; Isaac Curtis, former Cincinnati Bengal Outstanding Wide Receiver; and Floyd Little, former Denver Bronco Great Running Back. Professional cheerleaders, complete with a marching band was also in attendance. Patrons were encouraged to put their own teams together for a private gathering in the high-tech Skyboxes.

Also included in this event was a raffle for valuable sports memorabilia including autographed helmets, jerseys and footballs.

Doors opened at 1:30pm with an anticipated kick-off scheduled for 3:15pm. Admission was $125 inclusive (an additional fee for a Skybox).

The Riviera added Jay White as Neil Diamond. Neil Diamond himself called White in an August 2001 interview his "favorite tribute performer." Many across the country have already joined the Jay White Fan Club. Susan Spilger of Iowa City is White's fan club president. Spilger began White's fan club in November 2000 and says that while her core group is in the midwest, fans have joined all over the country, from New York to Las Vegas, to California.

"Jay is a top-notch entertainer and does Neil to perfection. Jay himself is the most gentle, caring person that you would ever want to know. He'll meet with his fans and have coffee and he's just Jay. But when he's on stage, he's really Neil. He's got Neil's moves, voice and mannerisms to perfection." - Susan Spilger

White met Diamond's only brother Harvey, a few years ago. Other family members as well as Neil's band members have seen White perform.

"His mother and his son have come to see me. After the show, his mom came up to me, put her hands up to her face and exclaimed 'Oh my god, you're just like my son on stage! And you have his eyes.' Later that year, in 1996, I met Neil backstage when he appeared at the MGM Grand Garden. He told me that he had heard wonderful things about me from his mom, son and band. He and I had a picture taken together and he signed it. 'Only Memorex can tell.' I was so flattered." - Jay White

In February 2002, it was announced that Splash now has its own show program. Riviera was selling them for $10.

On February 9, 2002, actor Joe Pesci stopped by the resort to celebrate his 59th birthday and visited Crazy Girls for the third time. Pesci had a full-blown birthday celebration with Crazy Girl Heidi Deering whose birthday was the same date.

In 1994, during the filming of Casino, Pesci went to Crazy Girls and returned with pal Robert DeNiro. Deering had a speaking part in Casino and upon meeting Pesci, she learned they shared the same birthday. After seeing her on the show Blind Date, he called her up and flew to Vegas to see Crazy Girls and celebrate their birthdays.

Heidi Deering is on Pesci's left standing next to him.

"Joe Trammel is a funny act. He is so high-energy." - Joe Pesci

Personal Message from Bernie Allen:

"Homeless Benefit will blanket city with laughter

Comedian Bernie Allen will celebrate his 86th birthday on behalf of the City's homeless. Bernie's birthday is Monday, February 25th. To celebrate, he's going to host an all star comedy variety show at the very popular Bootlegger Restaurant and entertainment night spot in Las Vegas at 7700 Las Vegas Blvd., one block south of Belz Mall. Show time is 2-5:00pm

Admission price is a blanket or a jacket, or any other article of clothing for men, women, and children, or even canned food. It still gets pretty cold at night, and I'm going to ask people lucky enough to have a roof over their heads and a warm bed to sleep in to help me get some warm clothing for those less fortunate. Helping the homeless is the greatest birthday present I could want.

Many comedians and singers have already promised to be there, as well as many other "surprise celebrity guests". We're doing this on a Monday afternoon so all the people who work nights and weekends and never get to see shows can come in.

I want to thank the owners of the Bootlegger Blackie, and Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt for making the room available for the show and benefit for the homeless. Sonny King and Blackie Hunt appear there every Friday and Saturday night. They've become a great team!" - Bernie Allen

Riviera Casino 2002

On March 13, 2002, Riviera hosted a Press Party to introduce Marlene Ricci and Jay White from 7:00pm through midnight. After the Press Party, everyone adjourned to the Mardi Gras Complex party room on the second floor for food, drink and camaraderie. John Neeland provided us with pictures of the party. Set No. 1 depicts Marlene Ricci, Jay White, Frankie Scintas of Scintas, and White's publicist Robbie Katz; and Katz and White; Set No. 2 depicts Carme, John Neeland, and Sig Sackowicz, and Bernie Allen, John Neeland, and Sonny King; Set No. 3 depicts John Neeland, Marlene Ricci, and Riv's Director of Advertising and Public Relations George Staresinic; and George Staresinic, John Neeland and Sandy Hackett; and Set No. 4 depicts Frank Marino, Marketing Director for Sahara/syndicated columnist Jackie Brett, Sandy Hackett, and John Neeland; Stage Manager David Wright, Riviera President Bob Vannucci, Marlene Ricci, and Mel Carter, Advertising Manager for Entertainment Weekly; and Sandy Hackett, Mel Carter, and Jay White.

On March 26, 2002, Riviera presented her annual Passion Play of Las Vegas - "He's Alive." The show ran run through Easter Sunday, March 30th. There was one show each evening at 7:00pm with a special 3:00pm matinee on Easter. There was no admission charge, however seats were on a first come, first serve basis. Early seating was available by picking up your tickets at the Riv's Main Box Office (702) 793-9433.

The Le Bistro Theatre added Rockin' USA to her stable.

Rockin' USA was described as a fast-paced musical tribute to the early history of rock-n-roll, performed by Vegas' finest tribute artists and the Rockin' USA All-Star band. This show appeared nightly.

Even at close range, these performers were the very picture of the original artists. Adding to the authenticity of the production, all performers used their own natural voices with Ritchie Valens and Buddy Holly banging out tunes on their own guitars.

Harry Shahoian, as the King of Rock, kicked off the show with a set of early music from the fifties, including a selection of classics seldom heard on the Strip, and completed the show with songs from the 1968 Comeback Special. Shahoian truly brought the look and feel of this Vegas icon to the stage.

Ray Anthony was a dead-ringer for teenage heartthrob Ritchie Valens. Endorsed by the Valens family, Anthony portrayed Ritchie throughout Canada and the United States.

George Trullinger began the revue with Ed Sullivan ("a really big shew") and later appeared as Buddy Holly in his rendition of the "geeky" rock-n-roll performer from Lubbock, Texas including horned rimmed glasses and fender guitar. Trullinger played Buddy Holly in "Legends in Concert" at the Imperial Palace, and had brought that valuable experience with him to "Rockin' USA".

The band members were Dino Marino, Rob Eisler, Frankie Moreno, and Scott Webb.

In early 2002, Riviera hosted a party to welcome the return of service linking Southern Nevada and Tokyo. The air service was suspended after the September 11th attacks. Riviera President Bob Vannucci expected the three weekly JAL flights that utilized 747s would mean a lot of business.

Dr. Scott Lewis

Le Bistro Theatre also introduced Dr. Scott Lewis who appeared Mondays nights at 7:00pm.

A chiropractor and clinical hypnotherapist by trade, Lewis had been hypnotizing showgirls and other performers to stop smoking, lose weight and break other unwanted habits for over 15 years. His popular habit control programs have been sold throughout the world and his unique blend of hypnosis and proven behavioral techniques are so effective, he's been featured on Extra!, Inside Edition, E!, and The View.

Chaplain Carlie Bolin

Riviera Chaplain Charlie Bolin had to resign from the resort:

"On March 20, 2002, I told Mr. Grippe I would be resigning my position as the Chaplain for the Riviera. I am writing this because you all deserve an explanation as to why I made this decision.

Because of the events of September 11th, there was a Presidential Call-Up of our nations Reserve Forces. As an Air Force Reserve Chaplain, I was placed on active duty at the Headquarters of the Command Chaplain for Air Combat Command in Virginia for 12 months. After I had been here for 4 months, the Command Chaplain and my supervisor, both Colonels, asked me if I would accept a position that could keep me on duty for as much as 4 years. If it were not for out nation being at war and what they asked of me, I would have said no. My commitment was to the ministry to you at the Riviera.

What many of you do not know is, because of my commitment to be the best chaplain for you, I have taken several courses over the past 5 years in crisis intervention. That is a subject that was not taught in the Seminary. Because few clergy had this training and my ability to teach, I became an instructor. What the Air Force has asked me to do is to train Air Force Chaplain Service personnel in crisis intervention and ministry in a combat environment.

My current duties have required I be in direct communications with Chaplain Service personnel who are overseas with our troops fighting in the war on terrorism. Those Chaplains and Chaplain Assistants are helping men and women who have said, as the Chaplain Service have said, that they are willing to give their lives to prevent evens like 9/11 from happening again. They are all facing crisis situations on an almost daily basis. Our Chaplain Service personnel need what I have to teach.

I hope this helps you to understand that I did not just leave the Riviera for another ministry. I feel I have a mission and a responsibility to fulfill that mission. This may sound 'corny' to some of you, I hope not most of you. I believe in what this country is doing in our war on terrorism, but more than that, I know what the Chaplain Service needs to help our troops in dealing with crisis and death continually. I must do what I ca to help them.

The training I will do is in the desert near Nellis Air Force Based and I will be living in Las Vegas. . . . As for now, this is not Goodbye, but just my final official greeting. Blessings to you all." - Chaplain, Lieutenant Colonel Charlie Bolin

Sorrentino

On May 21, 2002, Riviera showcased Stephen Sorrentino's Voices In My Head. Sorrentino was a combination Vegas stage show, classic TV variety hour, concert, and standup comedy routine all rolled into one. The production featured showgirls and a live rock and roll band. It was reported that Sorrentino audiences were amazed by his unparalleled ability to move at break-neck speed from dishing out one-liners to displaying his incredible musical talents on the piano, guitar, saxophone and flute. His musical impressions went from Joe Cocker to Pavarotti, and his world famous Elton John segment is always a showstopper.

Voices keeps the audience involved with a variety of recognizable characters. Guests were brought on stage to participate with Sorrentino's ability to recreate famous characters such as Groucho, Jerry Lewis, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Sonny & Cher.

"This is a show unlike anything else you've ever seen on the Strip. It's more than an impression show; more than a rock concert; and more than a comedy routine. See it to believe it!" - Stephen Sorrentino

Also during this month, Ripley's Beleive It Or Not recently sent a producer to see the Crazy Girls show and investigate the tale of people who have rubbed the derrieres of the No, Ifs Ands Or . . . and had good fortune. They are currently searching for people who have had positive life-changing experiences after visiting the statue. Is it myth or reality?

Ripley's may be returning soon to do a story on the statue. If you've had good luck after rubbing the statue, please send your e-mail to [email protected]

This statue helped stand for what America is all about and is rooted in First Amendment Rights. When City Hall attempted to ban a billboard within Vegas city limits, the Crazy Girls fought for their freedom in the media and won. The Crazy Girls were ahead of their time and opened the doors for more shows of its kind.

Also in May, 2002, it was reported that the look-a-like mannequins enclosed in glass and the Crazy Girls bronze statute have their pictures taken constantly.

"We have two great photo ops outside. The Crazy Girls butt bronze statue and our enclosed mannequin display. They get just a many photographs taken, as the Treasure Island Pirates Show, or any of the other architectural wonders up and down Las Vegas Boulevard. People watchers along the world famous Strip will get an idea of what La Cage is all about when they see the lifelike display. The mannequins are permanent fixtures only 15 feet away from the Crazy Girls statue. Will the mannequins take the title of Best Visitor Photo Opportunity or Best Public Art from the Crazy Girls statue or in the Review Journal's Best of Las Vegas Poll?

They use mannequins in commercials and advertisements, so why not in front of the Riviera to bring in the crowds. These mannequins are so life-like and fully clothed. They're so amazing that people stop in their tracks. People are curious enough to want to see La Cage after viewing the display. Men acting as female celebrities, awards, and beautiful gowns . . . what else could you ask for? the ticket box office in right in back of the statue and to the right. People will want to buy tickets." - Frank Marino

Commissioned by the Riviera, Ruben Esparza, who owns Ruben's Display World operating out of Los Angeles, had been working in the mannequin business for over 25 years. His company has provided quality mannequins for Robinson's/May, Nordstrom, Windsow Fashions, Sears, and J.C. Penney.

Also in May, 2002, Rockin' USA was closed down.

Individuals and companies sent care packages of food, etc., to our Marines stationed in Afghanistan but hardly anyone thought about the zoning periods, the need for recreation. Director of Housekeeping Jimmy McDonald, Security Chief Mike Arnold, and Casino Operations representative Cindy Fields coordinated and sent 140 decks of cards and pounds of dice to the platoon not only making for great entertainment, but mementos from the 9th lady on the Strip. Riviera received many thank you notes from the grateful soldiers.

Also in May, 2002, Frank Marino went to see Dr. Lewis on a personal note. Click Here for the details.

In June of 2002, I had the opportunity to see Marlene Ricci, Jay White, and Ken Block at the Riv. Please click here to read about my June 2, 2002 experiences.

As stated in my experiences I asked Ken to provide me with any publicity pictures, press releases and reviews that he has. He provided me with the following:

Ken Block

"Ken Block is one of the most versatile comic impressionists on the scene today. His self-contained, state of the art show has been a tremendous success in theaters, cruise sh ips, corporate events, and showroom from Las Vegas to Atlantic City.

With over 100 impressions in each show, spanning over 50 years of singers, comedians, politicians and television and movie stars, this universally received act has something for everyone, and is regarded as first class entertainment."

"Anyone who is lucky enough to see you will be thoroughly entertained." - Curtis Young, Convention Manager - Kauai Marriot, Hawaii

"Your versatile combination of comic impressions, standup comedy, and musical parodies were perfectly suited for our audiences." - Chris Domijan, Entertainment Director, Radisson Hotel, La Cross, Wisconsin

"Block's as talented a humor-maker as we've seen on an Arbua stage in years." - Hector Hernandez, Aruba Sun

"Your performances were outstanding and your dedication to your craft apparent." - Bill Caputo, Executive Producer, KMF Productions

"In nearly thirty years of watching college entertainers, I have never seen anyone do such a professional job." - Thaddeus Seymour, President, Rollins College

"We at Allstate think you have a very special talent which should take you a long way." - Don Tate, Manager, Allstate Insurance

"If all of the comedians that come here were as professional as you, we would pack the club everytime." - Hal Johnson, Production Manager, Vance AFB Officer's Club

From June, 2002 to August 31, 2002, people saw Splash and ate for free with the Riv's special Free Burger King Chicken Whopper offer. They just had to pick up a coupon at any of the three Burger Kings in Barstow, Baker, Four Queen Hotel & Casino downtown, or in a Vegas Values coupon book found throughout the city. They presented the coupon at the Riv's Box Office for validation when they purchased an adult admission to Splash and got a free Chick Whopper from Burger King inside the Riv, Four Queens, or on I-15 at the Barstow, Baker or Lenwood exits.

In mid-2002, various celebrities appeared at the Golden Rainbow benefit. Click Here for a picture of standing: magician Fielding West, Marty Allen, Sue Motzinger, Lt. Governor Lorraine Hunt, producer/singer Tony Sacca, Riv publicist John Neeland, actor/vocal coach David London, Bill Acosta, actress Betty Bunch, producer Dick Feeney; kneeling: NBC Weatherman John Fredericks and his dog Jordan, Unknown, Breck Wall, philanthropist Jack Novick, David Harris, La Cage's Jimmy Emerson.

On July 1, 2002, Donald Trump purchased a 9.8% percent stake in the Riviera's parent company in a deal he says was solely done for "investment purposes" and he purchased the stocks with personal resources.

The New York-New Jersey real estate developer and casino boss bought 350,000 shares of Riviera Holdings stock $6.50 per share, or $2.275 million, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"I've always loved Las Vegas. I think the (North Strip) is an area that's getting better rapidly, and I think the current Riviera management has done a good job. This was just an opportunity for an investment. I'll let you know some day in the future if it was a good one or a bad one." - Donald Trump

U.S. Trust Co. of California also recently purchased 336,000 shares of Riviera Holdings stock for a 9.4% interest in the company, according to a separate filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The gaming company, which also has a Black Hawk, Colo., casino, has 3.57 million shares outstanding.

Nevada law does not require Trump or U.S. Trust to receive regulatory approval for the deals because each holds less than 10% of the Riviera's shares.

"As far as I know they're just looking at it as an investment. There's been no discussion, nothing going on. There's been no contact between any of the companies. Our stock's worth much more than where it's at, and they probably feel the same way" - Bob Vannucci, Riviera Chief Operating Officer

On July 2, 2002, Trump granted his Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts Holdings a one-year option to buy his Riviera shares.

With the 15th Anniversary of Crazy Girls, I am adding a comment regarding the controversies:

"The most controversial revue in the 50-some year history of The Las Vegas Strip is without doubt 'Crazy Girls aka 'Las Vegas Sexiest Topless Revue.' As it was running strong, the Las Vegas casino and hotel industry ran with the illusion that 'The Entertainment and Gambling Capital of the World' was going to be the new 'Family Capital of the World' and 'Crazy Girls' was among the last bastion of adult shows.

Chuck Rounds wrote in a review saying, 'The thing that I like about the show is that it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is --- topless entertainment. There are certain expectations when one buys a ticket for a show and with 'Crazy Girls,' we get what we paid for --- beautiful women with exposed breasts, dancing, teasing and taunting us. It is what it is. Admittedly, the show still sports the greatest and most effective billboard to ever grace the marketplace in Vegas. The backside view of a line of G-string wearing women has become an icon in the Valley. The sign has become so effective that they built a statue. It is a nice alternative for those who don't like strip clubs.'

As the days of controversy waned and Sen. Bill O'Donnell was written up in the Las Vegas SUN and The Globe for his conservative agenda against the 'Crazy Girls' cab backs, forcing one smaller company to bow down to his wishes, now strip nightclubs have returned to advertising on these cab backs without a peep from the senator. The 'Crazy Girls' will celebrate their 15th anniversary as the sixth longest running show of some 80 Las Vegas shows this September. You may event get an opportunity to have your photo taken with the 'Crazy Girls' after each show and rub the 'NO, Ifs and or...' statue's shiny bronze derrieres for good luck before you begin a night of gambling. The 1,777 pound statue is attached to the facade of the casino under the bright lights. 'Ripley's Believe It Or Not' is considering doing a story on it next season." - Wayne Bernath, June 2002

How did Frank end up in a room full of women signing bras?

"I attended a Vegas luncheon coordinated by performer Sunny Thompson and members of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. I was the only female impersonator invited to participate. So there I was at this swanky restaurant with real women the likes of Latin bombshell Charo, singers Sheena Easton, Marlene Ricci, Chrissie Scinta, and comedienne Rita Rudner, autographing bras and promoting breast cancer awareness which ended with an event called 'Bras Across The Strip' where the autographed bras were auctioned off. If this isn't one for Guinness, I don't know what is! All the sponsors reported over 8,000 bras of all sizes, shapes and colors were collected. They were strung from Mandalay Bay all the way to the Stratosphere tower. It was covered by all the news media but I was not here on the actual day. Wouldn't ya know? I was still in New York. I was happy to participate in some way.

I know that people donated all kinds of underthings, along with money. Only in Vegas! It will be interesting to see what the final total comes to, but the important thing is we raised the awareness level about breast cancer and the need for continued research. Maybe someone will do something for the fellas out there, like jocks across . . . oh never mind . . . all the charities need our help.

By the way, Sunny, who is married to producer Greg Thompson, asked me if I would participate in her renewal of their marriage vows. I thought why not? Then, she explained that it would be covered by NBC for a special in the Fall, complete with topless bridesmaids and me, the male Maid of Honor, in drag! I am honored and I know this will generate loads of publicity, which will be good for Las Vegas, the Thompsons and their shows, my home away from home at the Riviera . . . and me!" - Frank Marino, July 2002

In July of 2002, Riviera played headquarters when a production company arrived to work with the Crazy Girls for two new documentaries Portrait of Vegas and Showgirl Diaries to be featured on TNN. The all-new TNN was recently purchased by MTV and is now called The National Network. The Nashville Network will be going off the air as of midnight, August 31, 2002, and the all-new TNN will be hitting the airwaves as of September 1st.

"It was great. They interviewed all of the Crazy Girls and were given full access so that the general public knows that we are entertainers in the thespian sense. We are modern day showgirls that have extensive dance training. It was a weeklong shoot and even the creator of the show Norbert Aleman was interviewed at his luxury estate." - Karen Raider

Come to see Crazy Girls and you will see clips from FoxSports, FOX, ABC, NBC, CBSA, MSNBC, E!, A&E;, Discover Health, Playboy Channel, VH-1, Travel Channel and MTV.

Jay White and special guest, Streisand impersonator, Sharon Owens, proved that the Diamond/Streisand relationship is once again in full bloom when they team up to sing "You Don't Bring Me Flowers." Owens stopped in to smell the roses with White on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of August during White's show in the Le Bistro Theatre. After that, she was featured as a special guest on and off throughout the year.

"Over the years, I had worked with a couple of other 'Streisands' around the country, even when I was with 'Legends In Concert. Audiences liked it but the women who had done her previously seemed to be missing something, basically that true Streisand stage presence. So at the corporate shows I've done over the last few years, I've only used a female vocalists to do that duet. Then I bumped into Sharon at an event a few months ago and she told me that she was interested in doing a Streisand impersonation. She sent me a video of herself and, with a wig and costuming, she really had the look. And she naturally sounds like Streisand as well." - Jay White

"I've been singing Streisand for the last 20 years. For the last 10 years, I've been performing at a dinner theater, having a little fun with her persona, putting on a wig and costume and kind of spoofing her. Then someone said to me that instead of mocking her, I should be doing her for real. People have always told me that I look like her, even without the wig - I definitely have the nose! And it's an honor for me to say that I naturally sound like her when I sing." - Sharon Owens

On September 2, 2002, Rock This Town Live, a journey through the 50s and 60s, with some of the countrys most beloved rock stars of all time debuted at the resort. Produced by Chanel Entertainment LLC, and produced by Brent Bell and Paul Garcell, the show featured Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Ray Charles, Buddy Holly and the Man from Memphis, all re-enacted on the resorts famous stage. Frankie Moreno was a singing, songwriting and piano playing sensation who impersonated Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Ray Charles.

Born in Santa Cruz, California, Moreno first came to the attention of American audiences on Star Search in 1989. His popularity escalated around the country, but he remained unsigned with a major record label. He decided to start his own and soon sales began to grow with every new album he put out. His tour schedule became more frequent and his fan base would practically double every month. In 1999, Morenoss records were distributed throughout Europe, which led to radio stations playing their favorite Frankie songs. By the end of 2001, he had performed in front of thousands of people all across the world. While in Rock This Town Live, during this engagement, Moreno will be anxiously watching the charts for his follow-up album, Thirteen, just released with 13 hot-new tracks.

George D. Trullinger was no stranger to Las Vegas audiences. His tribute to Buddy Holly is well known, having brought Hollys music to the stages of the Mirage, Las Vegas Hilton, Landmark, Aladdin, Venetian and the MGM, amongst many others. He was a cast member of the world-famous Legends In Concert for 17 years. 2002 marks Trullingers 30th year in show business. A talented singer, songwriter, comedian, musician, show producer and president of his own production company, he often brings his impersonations of Ed Sullivan and Mick Jagger to his shows. From Huntington Beach, California, Trullinger has performed around the world in Russia, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Atlantic City and Hollywood. One of his biggest thrills was performing his tribute with Maria Elena Holly sitting in the audience.

Harry Shaholan began performing at age 15 in California stage shows and, while playing the lead in Grease, he discovered he sounded similar to Elvis Presley. With a recognizable look, Shaholan decided to pursue a full time career impersonating the Man from Memphis in 1993. His popularity grew from private parties and clubs in Southern California to major showrooms in Las Vegas, including venues in Mandalay Bay, the Venetian and the MGM Grand Hotel.

Rock This Town Live was presented nightly, Monday through Thursday, at 5 pm. Tickets were $19.95 plus tax and fee, and VIP seating, including one drink or a buffet, was available.

Also in September of 2002, hypnotist Dr. Scott proudly announced the addition of "Nugget", the world's first Hypno-Chicken, to his Las Vegas stage show. Dr. Scott first discovered Nugget on a recent trip to the city zoo where he witnessed the hypnotic animal's talents firsthand.

"I've never seen anything like it. He (Nugget) was hypnotizing the other zoo animals by staring at them, then making three complete circles while clucking and bobbing his head up and down. During the hour I observed him, he hypnotized four ducks, two monkeys and a salamander." - Dr. Scott

Recognizing the animal's extraordinary talent, Dr. Scott asked for permission to showcase Nugget in his hypnosis show at the Riviera hotel. The zoo enthusiastically agreed with the provision that Nugget would not attempt to hypnotize any white tigers.

On October 15, 2002, the latest incarnation of Splash was unveiled including all-new, high energy dance numbers - a series of scenes from Kander and Ebb's Cabaret, the numbers explained above, and a sexy salsa dance routine to the theme of Dirty Dancing. Lead male singer Smokey, Jr., since I've had the time of my life with Chad Davis and Laura Rodriguez setting the stage with an adagio of the more serene moments of the 1987 film. As a Latin beat kicks in, the stage comes alive with spirited, sultry dance bringing the Swayze/Grey moves to life.

Vegas is ready for this type of show. The enormous popularity of shows like the blue Man Group, Amazing Jonathon and Penn & Teller demonstrate there is an audience for entertainment beyond sequins and feathers. - Dr. Scott Lewis

On October 28, 202, Soprano star/Riviera employee Steve Schirripa's book became available to the public.

On Halloween, some of the cast of La Cage took a limo to Vegas' NBC affiliate, KVBC, to do interviews promoting the long-running show. Marino (seen out of costume), Larry Edwards as Tina Turner, newest member of the cast, Sammy Gonzales as Liza Minnelli, and Chris Woods as Diana Ross drew stares from the public as they poured out of the limo into the station lobby.

"Halloween was the perfect day for La Cage people to go about town promoting. After all, we dress up every night! At this time of year it gets a little slow for other shows and the audience counts are lower before Thanksgiving and Christmas, but we manage to pack 'em in every night." - Larry Edwards

"Everyone loves Liza. She's had so many looks, but I believe how I impersonate her in the show now is how everyone likes to remember her. Her health has taken a toll, but she's on that comeback trail. Outside of show-biz circles, many people never knew she was away." - Sammy Gonzales

"We had so much fun on the News show with Sue and Scott. We couldn't stop laughing. They gave us at least give minutes of airtime. After the news, we dashed over to another show taping, hosted by Dennis Bono. It was a successful day for all of us and La Cage." - Frank Marino

On October 25, 2002, Safety Supervisor Wayne Matherly presented Randy Freeman the award for "Outstanding Safety Performance." Randy Freeman, a native of Nevada. Randy is married to wife Dawn and has three children, Kristen, Alisa, and five month old Stephen. Randy began his employment with the Riviera Engineering Department on May 16, 1988. Randy had installed platforms, guard rails, ladders, walkovers and exit ways in many locations through the property, with each job meeting OSHA standards. Several hazards are connected with welding, gas cutting, grinding, and fabrication of materials. Taking the time to think through a project and how to do it safely is crucial in maintaining safety in the workplace. Randy has responded by completing projects quickly and has always placed safety first. Some recent safety additions to the 9th lady on the Strip included Guard rail extensions provide safety for repairs at the Monaco Tower, replacing an extension ladder with the proper fixed ladder, in addition to installing guard rails, preventing the potential for falling off the upper level, guard rails installed around the roof skylights preventing employees from falling through while cleaning and performing maintenance, a ladder and guard rails enabling employees to work safely above the Splash Theater, guard rails and a ladder at the top of the Beckett Tower elevator room prevents falls. A platform extension creates a safe environment for employees to work on electrical panels.

LCpl. Jesus Diaz, service record book clerk with the Recruit Administration Center, lived in Las Vegas until he left for recruit training - both times. After graduation from Las Vegas High School in 1998, Diaz left for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, CA. He had few problems with the rigors of recruit training until a few days before leaving the confines of MCRD for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA, for the field training portion of recruit training. As Diaz ran a PFT he felt his left ankle give out and heard a pop. After months in Medical Rehabilitation Platoon, he was given the option to stay at recruit training or head back to the chaos of Las Vegas.

"It didn't seem to be getting any better, so I decided to go home and get better there." - Jesus Diaz

While his ankle did improve, it was not back to 100% until he began working out every day to strengthen his legs that had lost significant power due to the injury. Back in Sin City, Diaz worked as a front desk clerk at the Riviera.

"It was nothing to see the 'high rollers' lose 15 grand on a hand of poker, or hit a million dollars bonus on a three dollar bet."

Although the job at the Riviera was paying Diaz well, some part of him was always missing. Life in Las Vegas is what you make of it according to Diaz. "If you go looking for trouble, you'll find it." Diaz said.

For the most part, trouble was something Diaz stayed out of. While he wasn't the best student, he definitely accomplished his goals. He also has a huge debt of gratitude to his teachers. "I we a lot to my teachers. They never gave up on me even when I skipped more school then I went to. I told my grandmother that I wanted to to back to boot camp to try it again and she was so proud. She gave me her blessing and I went back."

Diaz has been raised by his grandparents since he was 4 years old. While his grandparents are his internal strength, he points to his cousin for his source of motivation for pursuing a career in the Marines. "My cousin was a corporal in the Marines. He got and went to work with the Immigration and Naturalization Service and now he's in charge of approximately 20 cities all over CA. It's rough on him - immigration agents who happen to be Mexican have it rough in CA. His work ethic is what I try to live up to." The discipline Diaz learned from his teachers and both sets of drill instructors is a valuable asset for Diaz as he now finds himself in an unfamiliar position - role model. "I was the first person of all my cousins, aunts and uncles to graduate from high school. My cousin is about to start high school and she runs with a rough crowd. They try to tell her that she won't make it and she isn't good enough. She looks up to me because that is what people told me when I said I wanted to go back to boot camp. I made it, and so can she."

Future plans are hazy for Diaz, who likes to keep his options open. "If I don't make the Marines a career, I'd like to go get my job back at the Riviera. Now that I'm 21, I can have a job on the floor making real money." If the Marine Corps does become a career, Diaz would like to head to Spain, to be around a culture about as close to his Juarez, Mexico, roots as possible. Regardless of where Diaz goes, he'll carry with him the lessons he's learned in Marines. "If I could re-do high school, I'd change the way I did things. Being a Marine is the best more I ever made. That I wouldn't change." Questions - What about you makes you unique? I'm probably one of the only Marines with no prior service that has a DD-214 (separation papers) from in my SRB. 2. How do the high rollers treat you when you go home to Vegas? There's an Air Force base down the street a ways, so people look at the Marines as a novelty. 3. If you could sit down and talk over dinner with anyone in the world, who would it be? Definitely my grandmother. She always has great advice regardless of the situation.

"My name is Jesus Diaz, and I am a Lance Corporal (LCpl) in the U.S. Marine Corps. I used to work at the Riviera in late 1999 until around mid 2000. While working at the Front Desk, the Front Desk, Room Res. and the Bell Captains new me as Jesse. Working at the Riviera was one of my best jobs, while living in Las Vegas. I learned a lot about dealing with people while working the Front Desk. That experience has been a benefit to my carrier in the Marines. The best thing about working at the Riviera is all the great people I had the pleasure of working with. I would like to ask a couple of favors. The first is to have a couple of the Rivera's newsletters sent to me if you use my story. The second, is if you couple personally deliver copies to the Front Desk, Room Res. and the Bell Desk, and tell them I said 'Hello.' Thank you for your time. - Lcpl Diaz

"The net loss for the quarter was primarily due to the refinancing of our debt which was very costly and drastically affected our bottom line and equity. However, we determined that it was essential that we take such action. The Black Hawk debt was extremely expensive with its 13% coupon and EBITDA "kicker". The $175 senior notes were maturing in two years and we did not want to be going to the market facing a maturity deadline, The high yield market was receptive to new issues in June when we went on our road show. Indeed, we were fortunate to have completed our solicitation only days before the stock and high yield markets were devastated by WorldCom and other corporate scandals. We now have a firm foundation for our existing operations and future growth. For the next eight years, debt service consists primarily of $24 million interest expense on our new bonds. Most importantly increased liquidity with our $30 million revolver is a major step in allowing us to go forward with proposed projects in Missouri and New Mexico.

We are encouraged by the fact that consolidated EBITDA, as adjusted, increased 7.3% from the prior year's quarter. We are especially pleased with our Las Vegas operations given the slower slot volumes experienced during the quarter. In Black Hawk, even with a slight decline in EBITDA, our margin was a very healthy percent. Black Hawk's continued excellent EBITDA margins and return on investment motivates us to accelerate our expansion into new venues.

This has been a difficult year to our Las Vegas property and I want to congratulate Bob Vannucci and his team on achieving 22% increase in EBITDA, as adjusted, in the current quarter even with a 5% decrease in revenues. The world economy, terrorism and the threat of war are not conducive to leisure travel. However, we believe that with continued tight cost controls and focused marketing programs we will see steady improvement at our Las Vegas property. Our diversification efforts are proceeding with our recent endorsement by Jefferson County, Missouri for a casino/hotel development project located approximately 22 miles south of downtown St. Louis. We filed our formal application with the Missouri Gaming Commission on October 9, 2002, and look forward to presenting our project to the State of Missouri. However, we have been informed that the site selection process will not begin until early winter of 2003. Assuming we were to receive approval from the state regulators, construction work should start in 2003, with a completion date of 2005.

The New Mexico Racing Commission is currently processing our application for a "racino" in Hobbs. We hope to appear before the Commission before the end of the year.

I have been told there have been some rumors circulating that I am planning to retire in the near future. Let me assure you that they are unfounded. Although I have not been as visible in Las Vegas as in the past, this is because I have been concentrating on our refinancing, Black Hawk, and on potential new properties in Missouri and New Mexico. Besides with my ownership of 18% of the Riviera stock, rest assured, I am keeping a close watch on "the store." - Bill Waterman

"Our third quarter results, EBITDA, beat last year by 22%! This is the first time since early 2001 we've had quarterly results which were better than prior year. This is a testimony to the great job done by every Vice President, Director, Manager, Supervisor and Team Member. Everyone did an outstanding job helping to increase revenues, control expenses and working to achieve their budgets. I personally appreciate the contributions each of you have made.

Our team members do an outstanding job of hosting and servicing our guests. Our longtime customers continue to visit because our team members remember and take great care of them making them feel like they are part of the family here. I am proud to say that our customers come first with all of us.

We are seeing increased numbers of walk-in guests. Our Splash, Mardi Gras and Le Bistro show counts are increasing. Those extra customers help increase revenues in our food, beverage and gaming department. You'll be seeing a lot of activity around the property. We are working on several capital projects to freshen up and improve our facilities to keep us competitive in today's market.

I am confident that our country will continue to recover from the effects of 9/11, the recession, the stock market scandals and declining stock prices. Las Vegas always leads the way to recover. We pride ourselves on providing value for the dollar and I believe we'll soon see customer volumes and revenues return to the profitable levels we experienced in the first part of 2001. Warmest holiday greetings to each and everyone of you and your families. Here's to a happy, healthy and prosperous 2003! - Robert Vannucci

Bringing in 2003 in the Royale Pavilion - Fabian/Gary Lewis & The Playboys/Mark Lindsay (formerly of Paul Revere & the Raiders)/Andy Kim/Ron Dante from The Archies/Billy J, Kramer. This party consisted of a special first-class gourmet dinner, open bars, hors d' oeuvres and party favors for a preferred seating price of $199.99, which included all taxes, gratuity and fees.

Fabian Forte, born on Feb. 6, 1943, was discovered at 14 sitting on his front steps in Philadelphia. Because of his good looks and ability to excite an audience, by age 15, he won the Silver Award as "The Most Promising Male Vocalist of 1958." By the time he was 18, he had recorded eight albums with dozens of hit singles which earned him gold records for Turn Me Loose and Tiger and a gold album for The Fabulous Fabian. In 1959, he made his screen debut in Hound Dog Man. His role as a homicidal maniac in the TV production A Lion Walks Among Us solidly established his credentials as a versatile and powerful actor. He has had featured roles with John Wayne, Jams Stewart, Tuesday Weld, Karen Black, George Segal and Jack Palance, with over 30 films to his credit. He produces his own concert series, as well as perform with Frankie Avalon and Bobby Rydell as The Golden Boys.

Gary Lewis was born in 1946 to his mother Patti, and his famous father, comedian Jerry Lewis. He was named after Cary Grant, but the hospital made a mistake and recorded his name as Gary. For his 14th birthday he was given a set of drums. He formed a group and four years later Gary Lewis and the Playboys were born. They began playing at Disneyland, where West Coast producer, Snuff Garrett signed them to a contract with Liberty Records. Garrett suggested to Gary that his dad use his connections to get the group a guest appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. They appeared in January of 1965, and became an overnight sensation, bringing their new song This Diamond Ring to #1. In 1965 and 1966, they released seven songs that made the top ten - This Diamond Ring, Count Me In, Save Your Heart For Me, She's Just My Style, Everybody Loves a Clown, Sure Gonna Miss Her, and Green Grass. In 1966, Lewis was draft and inducted into the Army in 1967. When discharged in 1968, tastes in music had changed but after reforming the group, they managed a grand total of 15 songs in the top 100 by the end of the decade.

Mark Lindsay was lead singer, sax player and percussionist for Paul Revere and the Raiders until he left in January of 1975. He also produced and wrote most of their songs. Revere and the Raiders was the first rock group signed by Columbia Records and the first group to bring Columbia a gold rock n' roll record Louis Louis in 1963. Along the way, the group was signed as the house band on Dick Clark's MTV precursor Where the Action Is. They continued to record new material for Columbia through 1973, including the largest selling single in Columbia's history to date Indian Reservation. Lindsay pursued a solo recording career at the same time and recorded the platinum single Arizona available on The Best of Mark Lindsay, the Arizona/Silverbird combined CD, and Arizona and Other States of Mind.

Born Will Howard Ashton in 1943, Billy J. Kramer grew up in Liverpool, England. Under the stage name Billy Kramer (with Kramer chosen at random from a phone directory), his performances brought him to the attention of Brian Epstein. Epstein set out to add Kramer to his growing managerial empire, which included the Beatles and Gerry & The Pacemakers. At the suggestion of John Lennon, Billy added the J to his stage name, in memory of John's mother, Julia, and for his newly born son, Julian. Lennon and Paul McCartney recorded Do You Want to Know a Secret in a toilet, as it was the only place they could find peace and quiet. With this tune, Kramer and his back group, The Dakotas, claimed the #1 chart spot in England, topping the Beatles. The Lennon/McCartney compositions Bad to Me, I'll Keep You Satisfied and From a Window all became International million sellers for Kramer. His appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, Shindig, and Hullabaloo rocketed him to a place in rock n' roll history as the pioneer of the British Invasion. Little Children, written by two Americans, Mort Shuman and John Leslie McFarland, became his biggest selling worldwide hit. Kramer moved to the U.S. and his now lives on Long Island, New York, with his wife Roni, two sons, and dog, Elvis.

Born Andrew Joachim in Montreal, Canada, in December of 1946, Andy Kim was a child singer and performer whose interest turned to songwriting and running away from home. On one of his trips to New York City, he met writer and producer Jeff Barry, who signed him to the Barry's Steed label. Lack success in America, Kim and his brother Joe decided to start their own label, Ice. A tape of his debut release of Rock Me Gentle landed on the desk of Capitol Records, they offered him a contract and the song reached #1 on the 1974 charts. With Jeff Barry, Kim wrote for The Archies and, although Rock Me Gentle, is certainly not bubblegum, How'd We Get This Way and Rainbow Ride were two exciting examples. Kim also wrote for the Monkees and their songs Oh My My, I Love You Better, and Do You Feel It Too appeared on their Changes album. He stopped recording in 1974, but returned under the name Baron Longfellow with two albums in 1984, a self-titled album and Prisoner by Design. In 1990, he sang background vocals to Edward Scissorhands.

Ron Dante has a room full of platinum albums, Grammy, Clio and Tony awards. He is probably best known for his work as a producer for Barry Manilow, Cher, Dionne Warwick, Irene Cara, Ray Charles, John Denver, Pat Benatar and many other major recording artists. His collaboration with Manilow produced one hit after another including Mandy, I Write The Songs, and the Grammy winning Copacabana and Could It Be Magic. Dante sang the song Sugar, Sugar which topped the top 40 charts and was voted Song of the Year for 1969. It's Dante's voice you hearing signing You Desert A Break Today for McDonalds, as well as Coca Cola, American Airlines and Budweiser. He won a Clio for his work on Volkswagen.
