Sinatra also held an honorary doctorate at the University of Nevada.

On the outside, Caesars marquee announced "Sinatra - The First 40 Years." Above the main entrance of the hotel hung two 80 by 45 foot oil paintings. David Breashears, a four-time Emmy Award winner was the producer, director, cinematographer and leader of the Everest expedition, was on hand for the premiere. Breashears spoke to the audience before the film, explaining that the challenge of climbing Mt. Everest had nothing to do with the risk, that you're not trying to do something to kill yourself. Rather, the challenge is in wanting to stand on the top of the world and shout about what you have done, and you do it in spite of the element of danger as opposed to because of it. The cost of the expedition was over $1 million because of the cameras, the equipment, the film and the hiring of extra sherpas. Normally an expedition cost about $250,000.

The Magical Empire showcased Jeff McBride/Bob Jardine/Fernando Keops, Joseph Gabrield/Earl Nelson/George Tovar, John Skyrock, and Scott & Jenny Alexander.
On January 20, 2001, Caesars hosted the Nevada Ballet Theatre's Black and White Ball where Debbie Reynolds was honored as Woman of the Year. In attendance were Phyllis McGuire and Carrier Fisher.
In March of 2001, Caesars stated that are definite plans to add a showroom. Caesars has suffered when they closed the Maximus to provide space for more high-roller suites. Caesars empties out in the evening as people look for entertainment at the other resorts' shows, including Caesars' sisters, Flamingo, Bally's, Paris, and Las Vegas Hilton.
Caesars was a multi-winner in the 2001 What's On Visitor's Choice Awards for: Best Mall/Shopping Center and Women's Apparel (The Forum Shops), Favorite Hotel, Best Bellmen, Best Race & Sports Book.
On April 10, 2001, Park Place Entertainment Corp. announced plans to build a replica of the Colosseum at the resort. The $65 million project will be a 4,000-seat entertainment venue, designed to replace the hotel-casino's famed 1,000-seat Circus Maximus showroom. Located in the center of the Colosseum will be a 22,000-square-foot stage.
The Colosseum, located near the entrance to the Forum Shops, is part of a master plan to expand the resort. Also on deck are a 35-story, 800-room hotel tower, which would give the property more than 3,250 rooms. With 2,454 rooms now, the expansion would push Caesars on to the list of the city's 10 largest hotels. It would still trail such giants as the MGM Grand, the city's Mandalay Resort Group properties (Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur and Circus Circus) and her older sister Flamingo.
"The name Caesars has always been synonymous with the word 'entertainment' in Las Vegas. This new venue will mark the Palace's return to that pre-eminent position." - Thomas Gallagher, Park Chief Executive
Construction will begin in the coming weeks, but a specific timetable for its completion hasn't been set yet. Nor has a timetable been set for construction of the new hotel tower. Further details will be announced in the next two to three weeks.
The project comes on top of heavy capital spending at Caesars in 2000. To make Caesars competitive with the Strip's newer properties, Park changed the facade on Caesars' older hotel towers, redesigned 600 hotel rooms and added two restaurants. This summer, two high-end poolside villas will be completed at a cost of $24 million, and a high-end gaming salon will be added by year's end.
"For Las Vegas, the return of a big entertainment venue at Caesars could give the Strip something it's been missing since the Circus Maximus vanished -- a venue for regular appearances by big-name headliners. The key is, 'Are they going back to the same kind of headliner entertainment they had at the showroom?' If they have that, it'll stand out. If it's just another arena ... they're just going to blend in like everyone else. They stood out as one of the few headliner venues before they got rid of (Circus Maximus)."
- Anthony Curits, LV Advisor Newsletter
In the summer of 2001, it was announced that the Colosseum will open in March 2003, with a show starring singer Celine Dion. This show will also showcased the talents of Franco Dragone (Bellagio's O and Treasure Island's Mystere). The 4,000 seat showroom will cost a reported $65 million to build.
In 2001, restaurants contained in the resort include 808, Cafe Roma, Hyakumi, La Piazza, Neros, Palace Court, Palatium, and Terrazza.
In May, 2001, Shadow: A Bar at Caesars Palace opened. Designers say Shadow is a "sensual atmosphere enhanced by the constant presence of the provocative shadow concierges. Visible only through a sheer scrim screen, these multiple silhouette dancers will perform choreographed dance routines accompanied by original music." When the ladies aren't dancing, they mingle with guests, distribute cigars and act as lounge hostesses.
Shadow replaced the Forum Lounge and has seating capacity for about 100 people across its 3,500 square feet.
On June 28, 2001, a propane tank exploded on the roof of Caesars injuring three people and sending a huge plume of black smoke into the air over the Strip. A small propane tank tipped over and ruptured on the roof of a three-story hotel building and a worker's torch ignited the leaking gas. The tank, which was destroyed in the explosion, was believed to have held about 20 pounds of the gas. The explosion touched off a brief blaze on the roof injuring a 29-year-old worker with second-degree burns on his arms, face and hands and released.
Two tourists in a room near the explosion suffered minor injuries described as a possible concussion from the blast and smoke-related illnesses. The 11:25 a.m. the fire was contained to the top of the roof between two hotel towers. The blaze went to two alarms once the smoke was visible. There was about $30,000 in damage.
Firefighters quickly put out the fire, which was confined to roof and roofing material on top of the three-story hotel tower, which was being re-roofed. The fire did not extend into the rooms below the roof. The 2,454-room hotel and casino were not evacuated, but some tourists left the buildings after the fire alarms sounded and were standing in front of the hotel while firefighters put out the blaze although there was no risk to hotel guests and employees and an evacuation was not needed. The huge cloud of black smoke quickly dissipated, but traffic was slowed on the already busy Las Vegas Boulevard for about an hour. About 50 firefighters and paramedics and about 16 fire trucks and ambulances responded to the fire.

In May 2002 - Casino operators reached contract agreements with the union representing waitresses and housekeepers, virtually eliminating the prospect of a strike. The latest agreements between the Culinary Workers Union and the casinos were reached with Mandalay Resort Group, MGM Mirage, Park Place, Aztar Corp., and Harrah's. The new agreements cover about three-quarters of the 40,000 cooks, waitresses and housekeepers the union represents in Las Vegas. Under the new tentative contracts, workers will receive an average of $3.24 in increased hourly wages and benefits over the new contract's five-year life. Much of that will go to pay for higher health insurance costs, which workers will continue to receive free of charge.
In July, 2002, famed Bay Area chef Bradley Ogden, whose new take on classic "farm fresh" American cuisine has earned him national acclaim and a gallery of top culinary awards, will open his firstrestaurant outsidee of California at Caesars Palace in March, 2003. To be named Bradley Ogden, the new restaurant is scheduled to open in the same month that Celine Dion will debut in a Franco Dragone-produced theatrical spectacular at new Colosseum. The new Ogden venue will give Caesars one of the most exciting restaurant rows in Vegas located steps away from the Colosseum entrance -- with Jean-Marie Josselin's 808, Tony Tammero's Palm, Wolfgang Puck's Spago and Chinois. The restaurant, kitchen and bar will comprise approximately 9,800 square feet, offering 190 seats for dining and 60 seats for cocktails. The restaurant design, created by Engstrom Design Group of San Rafael, Calif., will be inspired by The Lark Creek Inn. At its entrance, Ogden's Vegas venue will feature a prominent bar designed to celebrate Northern California's tradition of fine wines. The restaurant will include two private dining rooms and satellite areas that can easily accommodate group seatings.
Ogden rose to national prominence as the executive chef for San Francisco's renowned Campton Place Hotel. Later, Ogden and partner Michael Dellar opened Ogden's signature restaurant, The Lark Creek Inn in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, which has been acclaimed by leading critics and publications as one of the best restaurants in the nation. It was followed by One Market Restaurant in San Francisco, Lark Creek in Walnut Creek and San Mateo, Yankee Pier in Larkspur, Parcel 104 in Santa Clara and Arterra in Del Mar. Among other awards, Ogden has been named Best Chef California by the James Beard Foundation, one of the Great American Chefs by the International Wine and Food Society, winner of the Golden Plate Award by the American Academy of Achievement and Chef of the Year by the Culinary Institute of America. A popular television guest, Ogden has appeared on the "Today" show, "Good Morning, America," "AM/SanFrancisco," "Dinner at Julia's" and the Discovery Channel's "Great Chefs of theWest" series. Ogden earned his reputation as one of country's most innovative culinary talents by transforming traditional dishes that showcase farm fresh American ingredients. Acknowledged as a trailblazer in new American cuisine, Ogden was inspired by the fresh trout, free-range chickens and just-picked fruits and vegetables he enjoyed while growing up in Traverse City, Michigan. In recent years, Ogden has forged partnerships with specialty produce farms, local fishermen and nearby ranchers to obtain classic ingredients at their peak.
