JAC LESSMAN

Jac Lessman, internationally known hotel designer and decorator, was responsible for the interior design and décor of Wilbur Clark's Desert Inn in its entirety as well as certain areas at the Stardust.

Lessman started his career in Chicago, after finishing Crane Tech. He got his start in the décor business in his father's shop that provided furnishings and interior decorations for the home. Later, he got his first job with the world's largest hotel furnisher, Albert Pick and Company. While there, he handled the interiors for The Pine Hills Hotel, a luxury resort-hotel in Pall Christian, Mississippi; Schroeder Hotel, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Marbro Hotel, Chicago, Illinois and the Paramount Theatre Chain of Theatres located throughout the country.

Lessman moved to New York to organize the Contract Decorating Department of L. Barth & Company. He was then commissioned to do the Governor Clinton Hotel in New York City and later won the contract for the swank Delmonico Hotel on Park Avenue, also in New York City.

After Prohibition was lifted, Lessman became very active in designing new bars and cocktail lounges as well as dance and supper clubs in hotels throughout the country. The rooms created by Lessman met with such great success that he was in demand by international hotel and supper-club operators to design their new rooms. He did the French Casino, as well as the International Casino and the Mayfair Casino, which were the largest, most sumptuous 'theatre-restaurants' in the country.

Lessman interiors were known to hit the pulse of the public and had great cash register appeal. His interiors were both unusual and practicable for the operator.
